The Subaru Outback served as the stepping stone for prospective SUV owners but could not make their minds up if they are ready to purchase said type of vehicle. The Outback also appealed to the market in which vehicle buffs don't want an SUV but craved for their functionality. The Outback at its unveiling was a Legacy with an AWD (all wheel drive), off-road tires, and a higher ground clearance. The victory continues the succeeding year with the introduction of the Outback limited which featured more luxury offerings. By the year 1999, a particular Outback was unveiled as a commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Subaru in the American market. The year 2000 was the breakout year for the Outback since it was now a wholly independent model, and not a Subaru Legacy anymore. An extensive redesign was made, making the Outback more powerful, larger, and sportier.
