Do not confuse the Saab 97X with the SUV Saab 9-7X. Saab 97X was more popularly known as Saab Sonett II and III. This two-seater coupe sports car was developed in 1966 as an updated model of the Saab MFI13 with only 28 units made available in the market. In 1967, an additional 230 cars were produced by the company. Some of the distinct Saab 97X parts includes a fiberglass that was attached to a lower frame and steel chassis. It also has a roll bar and a front suspension and transmission that can be accessed by moving the front section of the car forward. It runs with a three-cylinder two-stroke engine that can reach a maximum of 60 horsepower. The chassis designed proved to add torsional strength and afterwards recommended for use on light amphibious off-road vehicles. With the V4 Ford Taunus engine being installed in some of the Saab models, the 97X was redesigned to accommodate this type of engine as well. The result is a sports car that has a bulging hood and became known in the market as Sonett V4. Power output was increased to 65 bhp with a maximum acceleration of 160 km/h. When Saab felt that the Sonett II was being left in the race in terms of design, they introduced the new Saab 97 with the name Sonett III. Some of its features include optional air-conditioning, pop-up headlights, self-repairing bumpers and a floor shifter in place of the column shifter found in the previous model.
