Introduced in 1983 for the 1984 model, the Dodge Caravan is a mini van produced by DaimlerChrysler along with its sister model Plymouth Voyager or Chrysler Voyager. Before the Renault Espace, the Chrysler twins were launched, making them the first of their kind. It was however until subsequent generations when they offered the interior versatility – individual, folding seats that can be used as tables or removed completely. The Chrysler fortunately became the best selling minivans in the United States since their introduction. The Dodge Caravan is said to be the minivan of all time and was based on the Chrysler S platform. This platform is an extended derivative of the Chrysler K platform. A longer wheel base was introduced for the 1987 model year. This model was named the Grand Caravan, though it was still based on the Chrysler S platform. Actually, the invention of the minivan was the brainchild of Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich while they were still at the Ford Motor Company. The minivan production begun as early as 1983 and in mid 2005, there were more than 11 million Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth sold. To mark significant milestones, the Chrysler minivans had special anniversary editions issued. The first was in 1994 that was notable for the ten year anniversary edition badges and special two-tone paint and was available on the Dodge SE models. Marked in 2004 was the twentieth anniversary with the anniversary edition SXT Caravan. There were three trim levels on the first generation caravan – the base, mainstream Se and upscale LE. The three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and five speed manual were available with the four-cylinder engines including the turbocharged 2.5 L.
