Produced from 1995 to 2000, the first generation of Dodge Avenger was a 2-door coupe as replacement for the Dodge Daytona and the Mitsubishi-based Dodge Stealth. Along with the similar Chrysler Sebring coupe, the Avenger was built by Diamond Star Motors or DSM. This was actually a joint venture between Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors on a stretch version of the Mitsubishi Eclipse platform. The venture eventually ended in 1995. There were DSM markings in the engine compartments of Avengers and Sebring coupes built from 1995 to 1996. The former had a 103 in wheelbase and used either a 2.0 L I4 or Mitsubishi designed 2.5 L V6, coupled to either a five speed manual transmission, shared with the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon, or a 4 speed automatic was the 4 cylinder. The V6 was only made available with the A604 transmission and cannot be swapped out easily due to lack of transmission that can fit around the front axle. Many are not aware where Dodge Avenger actually came from. This model is actually a re-skinned Chrysler Sebring just as the Dodge Charger is a re-skinned Chrysler 300. The Avenger is apparently handsome compared to Sebring’s disjointed styling– afflicted as it is by a clash of Art Deco motif and Analytic Cubism. Its crosshair grille looks far more rugged than the Sebring’s muzzle, and more elegant than the stubby, pug-faced Dodge Caliber. The Avenger offers a unique design– especially compared to the boring and outright ugly sedans that dominate the class. Its genuine identity is an automotive Himbo.
